The Top 5 Effects of Energy Drinks

Within the past few years, energy drinks have become very popular, not only among adults, but among teenagers as well.
This has become a multi-billion dollar market and the quick energy jolt they provide is why so many are being consumed. The problem is that many people are not aware that they can have some serious negative health consequences.
As a former Olympian, husband and parent with a busy business I'm always looking for more energy in my day and the ease of grabbing an energy drink off the shelf was sometimes tempting. But with a teenage son my concerns have shifted to the effects of energy drinks.
I would like to share with you the top five effects of energy drinks you need to consider.
Effect #1 - Caffeine Intoxication
One of the main effects of these energy drinks happens to be caffeine intoxication. Most of these drinks have between 160-300 mg of caffeine per serving. A regular cup of coffee only has about 80mg of caffeine, which means that energy drinks offer a lot more caffeine per drink. This really becomes a problem when teens drink several of these drinks in a short period of time. Caffeine intoxication can include symptoms like insomnia, anxiety, heart irregularities, nervousness, and high blood pressure.
Effect #2 - Heart Failure
Another effect of these energy drinks is heart failure, which can occur when these drinks are mixed with alcoholic beverages. Alcohol is a depressant, while energy drinks are stimulants. This combination has caused heart failure, which has often resulted in d eath.
Effect #3 - Increased Heart Rate and Blood Pressure
Drinking energy drinks can also bring about the effect of increased heart rate and blood pressure. Studies have shown that those drinking just two energy drinks each day for a week saw an increase in heart rate and their blood pressure. In fact, in just a week heart rate increased by about 11% and blood pressure increase by about 8%. This increase makes these drinks especially dangerous for those with heart disease and hypertension.
Effect #4 - Higher Risk of Injuries
Studies have also shown that those who drink energy drinks have a higher risk of energy, especially if these drinks are mixed with alcohol. Consumption of these drinks can increase the risk of injury, need for medical help, trouble with sex, and the likelihood of traveling with drink drivers. When used with alcohol, the intoxicating effects of alcohol are masked, which means that people often drink even more than usual before feeling drunk.
Effect #5 - Dependence
Last, energy drinks also have the effect of dependence. Not only do they have high levels of caffeine, but they also have high levels of sugar as well. This can give drinkers a quick high, but a crash often follows. These highs and lows can lead people to grab more of these drinks. Eventually this can lead to a dependence on the drug, which provides a great risk of caffeine intoxication and other dangers.
